How to Store Bitcoin
What is self-custody?
Self-custody simply means moving your bitcoin off an exchange to a physical device known as a hardware wallet which can be disconnected from the internet. This process is often referred to as moving bitcoin into cold storage.
Why is self-custody important?
Keeping bitcoin on an exchange means you have no true ownership or control over it. If the exchange files for bankruptcy, or pauses withdrawals, you can lose access to your funds. Why risk it?
How do hardware wallets work?
When you setup a hardware wallet you will be given a unique bitcoin address to send your bitcoin to from your exchange.
How do I setup my hardware wallet?
Purchase one of the hardware wallets above and follow their instructions. You will be given a Secret Recovery Phrase (or "seed words"). This combination of words is a cryptographic key to access your bitcoin. It must be stored safely and never shared as others could access your funds.
What if I lose my hardware wallet?
If you lose your physical hardware wallet it's okay. You can regain access to your bitcoin funds by setting up a new hardware wallet using your Secret Recovery Phrase.
What other risks are involved?
Storing bitcoin safely requires a level of responsibility. You are in effect being your own bank, but it's not so hard. If this concerns you, consider using a service like SwanVault. As with all internet activities, you should also familiarise yourself with threats like phishing scams and sim attacks, etc. The golden rule is to never give your Secret Recovery Phrase to anyone and store it safely.
